World of Warcraft - Item Upgrading
Upgrades to items allow players to increase the gear score of an item to 700, and then add a final perk. Items can be upgraded by keeping them in inventory, and then taking them to the kiln.
Certain items can be upp'd for their unique stats (like a perfectly broken point armour that is rolled for melee PvP) and others, like weapons, do not change significantly after an upgrade, so they aren't worth upgrading.
Weapons
Weapons can be upgraded to increase their numeric stats such as damage to attack, crit chance PvE and damage from PvP. Weapons come with a flat-rate bonus that increases damage per second. A lot of weapons also have an unaffected bonus that is activated when three or more identical weapons are equipped in a unit. In certain instances, this bonus can add up to more than the amount of damage a weapon is able to upgrade on its own.
The cost of upgrading a weapon's capabilities is contingent on the quality of the weapon and its current level. For instance, a +2 weapon requires two standard Smithing Stones while a+3 requires four. The number of stones needed to upgrade a weapon will continue rise until it requires an upgrade to a higher level of Smithing Stones, at which point it will reset to one.
Upgrades to weapons can also reroll the stats of the base. While this is usually an excellent thing but it can also have negative effects as well. For items that only see use in a certain build (Whistant's shield for FB sorcs for instance) upgrading them can make them unusable unless you have an extremely fortunate roll.
Items of armor can also be upgraded to boost their performance. For instance, if you have a helm or chest, this will increase the defense of its base, while gloves and belts will increase their strength and dexterity. Armor offers a rerolling option for its Enhanced Defense%. This means that it is able to roll down to a lower value.
The upgrade template of a weapon will show the new stats that it will gain when upgrading, as well as the relative values of those stats. This means that a change from a sword that has 8 damage to an 11-attack-damage sword will result in the weapon gaining 33% attack damage. The 3% difference does not mean that the weapon will be hit 3 times less, as it is an absolute number.

Armor

The Champion Leathers, as an example, can be upgraded to a 5 defense rating, which will allow you to remain competitive in frigid conditions with a large group of adversaries. The Snowquill Headdress, on the other side, can be upgraded as high as +20 defense so that you can survive a raid with your friends.
You can't upgrade your armor like weapons. If you're playing as a Warrior then you should concentrate on upgrading your armor for physical power or the power of spells. It is also recommended to save your armor upgrades to upgrade the armor you will still be wearing at the end of the story, such as the Ring of Lightning, Spectral Shield or the mask you'll wear in the final boss fight, the Monter Parts Merchant Mask.
